Power lunch English ver.

Sam Wee took a deep breath, stepping into the glamorous gate of the law firm. It was the first day of his new job. Although this law firm was not the biggest in Thailand, its scale and ranking was not something you would overlook. Sam Wee knew that he was lucky, and smart enough to get a job in this firm. But right now? He was a nervous mess.

After filling up all the forms needed, he got his ID card. The HR lady—Sam didn’t catch her name—showed him and other newbies around. This firm was way way different from Sam’s previous and also his first law firm—although he had only stayed there for a few months—bigger, more modern and stylish, people talking faster……Sam was starting to feel a little bit dizzy.

“Newbies don’t have their own offices. We use hot-desking.” The HR lady pointed at the rows of long tables. “Find yourself an empty seat to work at. We will provide laptops. You can work in your mentor’s office if they let you.”

Sam nodded. He didn’t know who his mentor was yet, but he knew he would need to stick by their side to study their cases and collect and analysis data for them. Maybe they would let Sam take charge of some simple cases. Gosh, he just hoped his mentor was kind and willing to share experience with him. But look at this busy firm, it was more likely that his mentor would be too busy to mentor him.

This was when he noticed a young guy in leather jacket walking out of one of the offices. That guy was putting a baseball cap on his head while walking along the corridor. Although the cap hid his face, Sam Wee recognized that face with ease. Sam couldn’t help but stared with wide eyes, completely ignorant of what the HR lady was saying.

That was Sarawat! The guitarist of the popular band Ctrl-S!

Sam could hear Chirat—another newbie who was standing next to Sam—gasped softly. Bangkok was really something. You could literally bumped into celebrities everywhere!

“Chirat Palawat, this is the office of your mentor.” The HR lady seemed unaware of the celebrity walking pass them. She pointed at the next door of which Sarawat just exited, and knocked. Chirat nervously walked in.

“Sam Wee, this one is your mentor’s office.” She said, pointing at the very door that Sarawat just walked out of. There was a delicate name plate on the office door, which said “Tine Teepakorn Aekaranwong”

She knocked and opened the door.

“Here is your mentee, sir.”

Sam took a deep breath, and walked in with his most confident smile, although he was trembling from head to toe.

Sam was greeted by the most dashing man he had ever seen.

After working for merely one week, Sam Wee knew he was a lucky guy. Mr. Aekaranwong (please, just P’Tine) was definitely the best mentor ever. He was smart, quick-thinking, well-organized. He had a lot of cases, but he handled each one attentively, never overlooked any details.

P’Tine had earned himself many respected clients despite working in this firm for only 3 years. He never gloated about it, instead, sometimes he acted like he didn’t know why people wanted him. Sam knew he was just being humble, how could one so clever like P’Tine lacked confidence right? The more he worked with P’Tine, the more Sam admire him. Other newbies described their mentors as horrible monsters or snow queens, only Sam described his as an angel.

“I envy you so much. Would you consider switching mentor with me?” said Chirat, as they stayed overtime to finish some work one day.

“P’Fong seems a nice guy,” said Sam.

“He is a nice guy indeed. But he’s such a perfectionist. He made me re-write this paper twice already!“ said Chirat.

“About that, do you know that P’Fong and P’Tine went to university together?”, asked Sam, “P’Tine mentioned about it a few times. He said that P’Fong drove everyone crazy when they did group assignment together.”

“Really? P’Fong doesn’t talk about himself much. Tell me more!”

“P’Tine didn’t say much. He did say that P’Fong is very keen to details. He made his group members rehearsed so many times before presentations.”

“Geez, what a perfectionist.” Chirat sighed.

“That’s why P’Tine thinks that you will learn a lot from P’Fong. He kept saying that he had nothing to teach me, that I’m doing well on my own.” Sam shrugged.

“He must be joking.” Chirat said in disbelief. “He’s got nothing to teach you? Isn’t he so sought-after? Doesn’t he have so many big clients—“

“Who are you guys bad-mouthing about?” P’Fong came out of nowhere, with a steaming mug in his hand. He pulled a chair and sat down beside the newbies.

“No one!” The newbies shook their heads. ”We’re just talking about…uh, how do you get famous clients?” Chirat asked, switching topics.

“I don’t want famous clients, I want reasonable ones.” P’Fong said mindlessly. ”It’s a nice goal, though.”

“Well, it must be cool to have famous clients,” said Chirat.

“Aren’t you Tine’s newbie? Doesn’t Tine have some celebrity clients?” P’Fong looked at Sam Wee。

“Let me see…the CEO of a fashion brand, the rich woman last week, oh, and Sarawat of Ctrl-S. That’s all I know so far.” Sam counted.

P’Fong raised one brow.

“Well……the CEO case was appointed by the boss. The divorcing rich woman was introduced by her friend who was Tine’s client in previous case. As for Sarawat…” P’Fong halted dramatically, both newbies strained their necks to hear.

“…Sarawat came here because Tine was too cute to handle.” P’Fong smiled mischievously. “Good luck with your work. Chirat, don’t forget to hand in that paper I want by 10am tomorrow.”

P’Fong always looked so serious and competent, Sam Wee didn’t expect to see his joking side.

Sam saw the famous guitarist of Ctrl-S again a month later.

Strictly speaking, Sam was not a fan, his sister was, though. Her room was full of Ctrl-S’s posters and merchandise. She bought every album and went to every concerts if possible, even the oversea ones. Sam went to signing session with her twice, standing in line for hours, it was such a nightmare.

Ctrl-S’s music was really good, though. Even Sam who rarely paid attention to pop music could sing several hits of Ctrl-S’s. Their music was created by members themselves. Although each member had different style, their works combined made wonderful albums. Sam’s favorite band member is Earn, the bass. Two years ago when Ctrl-S got the best album award of MTV, Earn danced happily on the stage with the trophy in her arms. That was so damn cute. Sam definitely didn’t screenshot like a mad fan.

Sam was discussing a case with P’Tine when the office door swung open in a sudden. He was leaning on the back of P’Tine’s chair, looking at his computer screen together. When P’Tine turned his head at the door, his soft black hair brushed pass Sam’s chin. Sam didn’t realize how close they were.

Sarawat Guntithanon was standing at the door with a grumpy face. He wore a fitted jacket, denim jeans, he looked so good, it was like he walked straight out of a magazine photo. He took his cap off, glaring at both of them.

Does P’Tine have any appointment with clients today? Sam recalled the schecule in a frantic. No. Something happened that require a lawyer immediately?

Sarawat walked towards them, his burning gaze never left Sam. He reached out—and put a lunch box and a bubbling blue drink on the desk.

“Wat, you’re early!” Tine said happily.

“I’m not, it’s already lunchtime.” Sarawat pointed at his watch.

What? Lunch? Are they having a power lunch?

“Is it lunchtime already? Sam, let’s discuss this in the afternoon, you go have lunch.” Tine smiled at him.

“Okay, okay.” Sam grabbed his stuff in a hurry, not daring to disturb P’Tine’s lunch meeting with a client. P’Tine should had asked him to order in advance! How could he made a client brought him lunch!

“You are Sam Wee? Tine’s newbie?” said Sarawat.

“Yes! Pleasure to meet you!” Sam had been to the album signing! He had seen Sarawat in person before! Why was he so nervous!

Sarawat just nodded coldly.

Sam looked at his mentor for help, but P’Tine was opening the lunch box with such joy (“Wat you got me limited edition curry burger!”) and paid no attention to Sam at all. Sam excused himself in a hurry.

Later in the afternoon, Sam couldn’t hold his curiosity, so he asked.

“P’Tine, don’t you get nervous when talking to a celebrity? Like today?”

“Celebrity? What celebrity? Today?” Tine was confused.

“I meant Sarawat of Ctrl-S!” Sam raised his voice in shock.

“Yeah, right…” Tine still looked confused. “He has lunch with me all the time.”

P’Tine was such a big shot lawyer, he didn’t think someone who has 6M followers on IG a celebrity. Sam was blown away.
